What is a Topographical Test?

Topography is the study of the shape and features of land surfaces. In the context of the TfL topographical test, this essentially means demonstrating that you understand how to use maps.

The test contains 4 key modules on map-reading.

Once you have submitted your TfL private hire application, you will be invited to book in for a topographical (map-reading) test. You can prepare thoroughly beforehand with our in-person preparation sessions.

How to prepare for the assessment?

You can complete our Topographical training course to give yourself a much better chance of passing. We would recommend purchasing a Master Atlas of Greater London for home study.

Once you booked your test, it’s really important that you start your revision using our detailed online resources. This is free and will give a much better chance of passing the topographical test.

After you have submitted your application to TfL you will be invited to complete a topographical skills assessment test. You must complete this test to receive your Private Hire Licence.
